No gravitational waves found by LIGO

The LIGO collaboration just announced that no periodic gravitational waves were found in some frequency bands. Such gravitational waves are expected to be generated by neutron stars. They looked for coincidences between the two interferometers at Livingston and Hanford. It seems that finding gravitational waves are becoming a sort of Mission: impossible.

Don't hang your head just yet. The authors do make it clear that this is mainly a demonstration / first application of their search method on a limited dataset, and hold out hope for a factor 10 improvement in sensitivity when they let it lose on the full data.
